Science and Technology

Personal Definition of Science and Technology- Science and technology is about how children learn to predict, observe and gain knowledge about the natural and physical world. With science, you tend to explore more especially when they are exploring the world around them. This KDI can especially be important with their development because of children learning about everything around them with there being a ton of technology and the natural world around them.

1.) Name of Activity: Hatching Dinos

Originating Idea: Dinosaur week at school

Curriculum Area: Science and technology #47- Children experiment to test their ideas.

Materials: Baking soda, vinegar, water, small toy plastic dinosaurs, eyedroppers

Appropriate Age group: Pre-k (4-5 years)

Beginning of Activity: At group discuss how we will use vinegar to “hatch” our dino eggs.

Middle of Activity

Early Extension: Children will dip vinegar onto Dino eggs, one drop at a time.

Middle: Children will dip vinegar multiple times but at a slow rate.

Later Extension: Children will be able to understand that the vinegar is reacting to the eggs and that is what makes them hatch. The children will also be able to dip vinegar on the eggs multiple times with ease.

End of Activity: Clean up and wash hands for snack.

Follow-up Ideas (2): Further explain the chemical reaction the vinegar had on the “eggs” (baking soda), read “The Dinosaur Alphabet Book” by Jerry Pallotta and dance to “We Are the Dinosaurs” by Laurie Berkner

2.) Name of Activity: Sink or float

Originating Idea: Children’s interest with water

Curriculum Area: Science and Technology #48- Children predict what they expect will happen.

Materials: Plastic bins, water, paper towels, hypothesis graphing sheet, scrap paper, corks, bingo chips, metal rings, feathers, buttons, marbles, rubber ducks, etc.

Appropriate Age group: Preschool (3-4 years)

Beginning of Activity: At circle time gather children and discuss how they will be learning about sinking and floating objects. Explain what sink and float means.

Middle of Activity

Early Extension: Children will put items in water but not understand the concept of sink and float. Match very little objects on the sink and float chart.

Middle: Children will understand why some of the objects sink and float, some will be confusing. Can match some objects on the sink and float chart.

Later Extension: Children understand the concept of sink and float, they know the heavier the object the more likely it will sink, the lighter the object the likely it will float. Will be able to correctly match what sank and float on the chart.

End of Activity: Clean water up from table, refill bins with water and move to next center.

Follow-up Ideas (2): Talk about what animals can swim and those who can't swim in water.

3.) Name of Activity: Nature Hunt

Originating Idea: Children’s interest in being outside.

Curriculum Area: Science and technology #51- Natural and Physical world- Children gather knowledge about the natural and physical world.

Materials: Clipboards, crayons, template papers with pictures of leaf, flower, rock, bug, tree

Appropriate Age group: Pre-k (4-5 years)

Beginning of Activity: At large group, discuss what we will be doing for small group- A nature Hunt.

Middle of Activity

Early Extension: Children will point out or maybe label the items they see on our nature walk.

Middle: The children will use the crayon to mark off the pictures of the items they see as they walk through the woods.

Later Extension: Children will draw and/or write what they see in nature on their papers.

End of Activity: Walk back to the classroom, put clipboards in a basket and wash hands for snack.

Follow-up Ideas (2): Read about different animals you may see in the woods, weather discussion, graph what we saw/ didn’t see on our nature walk. Make bird feeders
